Sheikh Khalifa Medical City Drives Awareness Around Haemophilia

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) marked haemophilia day over the weekend in the hospital, in an effort to shine a spotlight on the rare inherited bleeding disorder which affects about 1 in 10,000 people.

Caregivers, patients and families took part in activities across the hospital today, including face painting, arts and crafts, games and cartoon characters.

Haemophilia is a bleeding disorder in which the blood doesn’t clot normally, and is a genetic disorder passed from parents to children, most often in males. Haemophiliacs bleed for a longer time after in injury, often internally. The bleeding can damage organs and issue and may be life threatening.

Treatment for the disorder is called replacement therapy which involves clotting factor infusions to replace the low or missing clotting factor in the patient.

SKMC, managed by Cleveland Clinic, is part of the SEHA Health System and owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA), which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
