Dubai based contemporary womenswear label, Twisted Roots, launches SS18 collection inspired by the city of Barcelona
Dubai, UAE, April 29, 2018: Latifa Al Gurg, launches her anticipated sixth collection of travel inspired womenswear guided by the works of Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi, a practiser of modernism and major inspiration for the SS18 Tessellation Collection.
The collection takes most of it’s inspiration from the ceramic tiles that blanket the beautiful architecture of park Guell on Barcelona’s Carmel Hill mountain range built in the early 1900s.
“It was interesting to me looking at the shapes that Antonio Gaudi chose. He decided to adorn his buildings with something that contracts his organic shapes. This juxtaposition inspired me to translate that into a garment,” says Latifa. This is evident in the pieces that involve curved silhouettes and a representation of tiles, constructed by the skilled pattern cutters at Twisted Roots’ Al Quoz studio.
The silhouettes feature scooped hem-lines and fluted sleeves in impeccably tailored tunics and shirts with intricate details, blown up on a larger scale to showcase tile-like cut outs and patchwork in contrasting colours.
The palette for this season is cool with shades of blue-ish greens in soft and subtle “mint ocean” opposed by bold “aqua”. Shades of neutrals of which echo in the background of each of Al Gurg’s collections are obviously inspired by the cities architecture in the purity of “stone” and “silver”.
Jersey comforts such as long sleeves tees and maxi dresses are made from Japanese Tencel whilst Twisted Roots signature shirting is produced in Italian cotton for more structured pieces, and in Chinese silk for floaty, feminine silhouettes. Al Gurg’s scarves are often one of the most in demand pieces from the collection perfect for travel and modest dressing in a soft to touch mix of modal and silk.
Statement pieces in this seasons collection are the crop tile jacket and midi tile stripe coat. Both are ideal pieces for layering a look to give it stand out appeal for occasions or taking a simple look from day to night.
