Abu Dhabi-UAE: 18 February 2018 - Abu Dhabi University (ADU) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Emirates Autism Society to collaborate in preparing qualified special education staff to teach individuals with autism. The agreement also aims to spread awareness of autism and its related challenges among different segments of society.
The three-year renewable agreement was signed by Professor Waqar Ahmad, Provost and Interim Chancellor of ADU and Dr Khawla al-Saadi, Chairwoman of the Emirates Autism Society.
With a view to enhancing awareness of autism and equipping ADU’s students with practical skills in teaching students with the condition, the memorandum of understanding establishes a framework for continuous collaboration between the two parties to hold workshops, specialized courses and conferences and develop practical training opportunities for Abu Dhabi University students at the Emirates Autism Society and its affiliated centers. Furthermore, the two parties will jointly run events, exhibitions and research programs to promote community awareness of autism.
Commenting on the agreement, Professor Waqar Ahmad said: “We are delighted to join hands with the Emirates Autism Society, in line with our mission to promote knowledge relevant to different areas of specialization among our students so that they may go on to serve varied social segments. The collaboration also reinforces the University’s keenness in establishing strategic partnerships with public and private sector entities to contribute to further enhancing the understanding of autism.”
For her part, Dr Khawla said: “Through this synergy with Abu Dhabi University, we seek to provide future educators with both the academic knowledge and practical skills to work with individuals with autism.”
