Alex Connor races to third in Junior Cup final
Dubai, UAE, July 13, 2016: An elite collection of Dubai Kartdrome’s finest racers represented the UAE on the world stage at the Racing Kart de Cormeilles (RKC) near Paris last weekend (7-9 July) during the 2016 SWS World Finals.
Up against some the best teams from around the globe, Dubai-based CG Racing Pro powered through the field throughout twelve gruelling hours of racing to seize the Endurance Cup title.
CG Racing Pro drivers Rami Azzam, Piers Pakenham-Walsh, David Terrien and Alban Varutti needed to dig deep to recover from ninth position in qualifying to eventually take the win. A combination of expert pit stop strategy and blistering fast drives by Pakenham-Walsh fired them to the finish line 53.724 seconds ahead of their nearest rival, Team Swiss Pro.
“It was a tough weekend with its fair share of trials and tribulations, but we kept our focus and came out on top. A fantastic team effort; three years in the making and we’ve finally done it,” said Piers.
In the Junior Cup Alex Connor also made a tremendous impact, battling his way to third in the world rankings. Starting out in sixth position on the grid for the Super Final he managed to work his way to P3 at the checkered flag, just 2.602 behind the race leader.
In all it was a good showing for the UAE racers, who collected a total of 16 trophies throughout various stages of the event.
The drivers were accompanied by Dubai Kartdrome’s David Bright, a former UAE karting champion and a two times European endurance kart winner, who advised the UAE team as they challenged and triumphed against the world’s best leisure kart drivers.
“We are extremely proud of our Dubai Kartdrome drivers; they represented us well this weekend,” said Bright. “CG Racing Pro was crowned Endurance Cup champion, Alex Connor nearly bagged the Junior Cup title and most of the drivers won silverware. These results show how competitive and strong the level of kart racing is in the UAE.”
