On an emotional final day of the Volta a Portugal, Rui Oliveira claimed the first professional victory of his career in the most fitting circumstances imaginable. Racing through the streets of his home city, the Porto native powered to victory on stage 10 and immediately dedicated his long-awaited success to Finlay Tarling and his family.
For Oliveira, a professional victory on the road has been a long time coming. The Portuguese rider became an Olympic champion in the Madison at Paris 2024, but through years of selfless work for his UAE Team Emirates-XRG teammates and several near misses of his own, that first win on the road had continued to elude him.
At his debut Volta a Portugal, Oliveira had been knocking on the door from the very beginning. He finished second to teammate Julius Johansen in the opening prologue, pulled on the leader’s yellow jersey following stage 1, and came close to victory once again when he finished second on stage 6.
On Sunday afternoon, Oliveira was given a hero’s welcome as he roared across the finish line to win stage 10.
Of course, the sporting significance of the final weekend had been placed firmly into perspective by the death of NSN Development Team rider Finlay Tarling on Friday. The 19-year-old lost his life following a fatal crash on stage 8, leaving the entire cycling community in mourning.
With the thoughts of the peloton firmly with Tarling’s family, friends and NSN Development Team, Oliveira had made clear before the final stage that he wanted to win in Finlay’s memory. In his post-race interview, the Portuguese rider paid tribute to the late Brit.
Oliveira: “First, I just want to give my condolences to Fin’s family, his brother, his friends, his team, everyone. It has been a rough couple of days, I cannot imagine what they are suffering. I said yesterday that I wanted to win, first of all, for Fin’s family and his teammates. This one is for them.
“I am so, so happy to win in my home. I live here, I am from Porto. I passed near my home four times; it gave me extra motivation, and this one is for Fin’s family. They are really in my heart, and for all my family who have supported me throughout these days.”
The technical roads and rolling terrain through Porto ensured there would be little respite before the finish on Sunday evening. Attacks continued to fly off the front as the peloton was gradually whittled down, before a reduced bunch charged towards the cobbled uphill drag to the line.
Daniel Cavia (Burgos Burpellet BH) was the first to launch his sprint, but Oliveira remained patient in his wheel.
Then came the moment he had waited his entire professional career for.
Coming out of Cavia’s slipstream, the UAE Team Emirates-XRG man surged alongside the Spaniard and powered clear towards the line. With daylight behind him, Oliveira crossed the line as the winner in the heart of his home city.
The emotion was immediate.
Having grown up in Porto and passed close to his own home on four occasions during the stage, Oliveira was able to celebrate the first road victory of his career in front of his family and friends. Beyond the finish line, riders from across the peloton made their way over to embrace and congratulate the Portuguese rider, underlining just how popular a victory this was.
After so many years spent working for others, and so many occasions on which his own victory had narrowly escaped him, this was finally Oliveira’s day.
Oliveira’s victory also secured the points classification for the Portuguese rider and brought the Volta a Portugal to an end for UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
Across the 11 days of racing, the Emirati squad claimed four stage victories, with Johansen winning both the opening prologue and the stage 5 individual time trial, Adrià Pericas taking his first professional victory on stage 7, and Oliveira bringing the curtain down with an unforgettable win in Porto.
Pericas also finished fifth overall and secured the white jersey as the race’s best young rider.
