Sensational Tadej Pogačar Claims Fifth Tour de France Title in Seven Years

 

 

As the curtain falls on cycling's greatest race, UAE Team Emirates-XRG stand tall once again. A fifth Tour de France title in seven years. Six stage wins. And a performance that reaffirmed their place at the summit of the sport.

 

The 2026 edition began with a historic start on Catalonian soil for the very first time, but by Stage 2, the spotlight was already on one team. On the rolling hills of Spain, UAE Team Emirates-XRG took control. Brandon McNulty and Adam Yates did the damage early, thinning out the field before Pogačar wound up his lead-out for young Isaac Del Toro, who flew round the final bend and launched his sprint. Pogačar sat glued to his wheel, with no rival in sight. The pair crossed the line arm in arm, sealing a one-two finish for the Emirati squad.

 

There was little time to reflect as Stage 3 brought more terrain suited to the team's strengths. This time the roles reversed, with Del Toro setting a brutal tempo that shredded the peloton apart. In trademark fashion, Pogačar opened the throttle and nobody could respond, claiming his first win of the 2026 race, and a second for UAE Team Emirates-XRG in as many days.

 

The next flashpoint arrived on Stage 6, with a true Pyrenean reckoning. The fearsome Col du Tourmalet headlined the parcours as the peloton braced for its opening GC battle. UAE Team Emirates-XRG announced their intent from the gun, with German powerhouse Nils Politt driving the pace from the front. As the road tilted skyward on the Tourmalet, the team came alive. The execution was seamless, and when the decisive moment came, Del Toro launched the move. Only Pogačar could go with him, and the pair carved out daylight over their rivals. Pogačar surged on, flew through the descent, and powered up the Gavarnie-Gèdre to claim his second stage win, along with the Yellow Jersey. Teammate Del Toro rolled home in third, enough to plant him atop the young rider classification.

 

On Bastille Day, UAE Team Emirates-XRG set out to honour the Maillot Jaune in style. Adam Yates set the early rhythm before Pogačar struck with 15.5km remaining, bridging up to race leader Carapaz and sailing straight past him. The passionate roadside crowds got exactly what they'd hoped for: a Yellow Jersey stage win on the nation's most patriotic day.

 

The GC contenders were granted a brief reprieve as a run of breakaway victories and sprint finishes played out, before a punishing Stage 14 arrived. With close to 40 riders up the road, Felix Großschartner set about his work, hauling the gap down to under two minutes before Brandon McNulty delivered Pogačar to the base of the final climb. As rivals piled on the pressure, Pogačar countered, immediately putting distance into the other GC men. While the Slovenian rode clear to another stage win, Del Toro found his own rhythm behind, reeling in the chasers to sprint home for UAE Team Emirates-XRG's second one-two finish of the race.

 

Pogačar entered the final week with over four minutes in hand over his closest challenger. Illness swept through the UAE Team Emirates-XRG camp, making for a subdued start to the week as Brandon McNulty was forced to withdraw. But all eyes were fixed on one date with destiny: Alpe d'Huez. The break forged a gap up the road that many believed unassailable by the foot of the climb. The World Champion thought otherwise. The race leader put the hammer down and set off in pursuit of history, bridging almost instantly to teammate Yates, who drove the pace on for a couple of kilometres before Pogačar struck again. Cutting through a wall of fans, he swept past Martinez, then Carapaz, and with 800m remaining, delivered the final blow, surging clear to become the firs Yellow Jersey to win atop Alpe d'Huez since 2018, and setting a new climbing record in the process.

 

At just 27, Tadej Pogačar continues to rewrite the record books. Not only through the results he delivers, but in the manner he delivers them. Composed under pressure. Incisive in the hills. Untouchable in the mountains. The finest rider on the planet, backed by the finest team in the sport, rising to the occasion once more when it mattered most.

 

Another Tour de France title. Another milestone. And still, the sense that the best is yet to come from the greatest rider of his generation.
