World Underwater Clean Up Day hosted by Skydive Dubai

Dubai, UAE 29th September 2013 – More than 80 countries participating in the international underwater clean up will be heading to the seas, lakes and rivers to collect marine trash and debris. For the first time in Dubai, Skydive Dubai team together with Dubai Municipality, Fazza Marine and the Pavilion Dive Centre joined the rest of the world in celebrating the 2nd World Underwater Clean Up Day.

The ecological initiative started by Global Underwater Awareness Associate (GUWAA), Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) and Project AWARE Foundation, is focused on reducing the amount and impact of land-based litter and solid waste in the lakes, rivers, and seas as well as its ecological, economic, health, social and security impacts which irresponsible waste management can cause globally.

“ Skydive Dubai is privileged to be part in spreading awareness and protecting the sea marine life, we are proud to host this international world record breaking event in Skydive Dubai dropzone” HE Nasser Al Neyadi, President EAF, Chairman of Skydive Dubai.

The goal is to pick up as much waste as possible and to unite all continents in non-political action; to popularize ecology and water protection activities, to educate and make people aware of the existing problem.

Alan Gayton, Skydive Dubai Operations Manager said““The Skydive Dubai Family has always strived to look after our island and surrounding area next to the beautiful Palm Jumeirah, not only above the skies but  on terra firma and in the Arabian Gulf Sea.

Skydive Dubai's rescue boat team has seen this first hand with the rescue of numerous sea turtles who mistakenly have eaten plastic bags thinking they were their food source of jelly fish.”.

The 3-hour clean up drive will be held in different areas (1) Logo Island - Perimeter: 947 meters
Area: 57.513 sq. meters Depth: 7 to 9 meters (2) Skydive Dubai Jetty Perimeter: 561 meters Area: 21.497 sq. meters Depth: 2 to 5 meters. The locations were said to be polluted with marine debris regularly. Professional divers and other participants have united to swipe clean the shore and underwater.

“The Pavilion Dive Centre is proud to be part of the World Clean Up. As Divers and explorers of the underwater world we have responsibility to become the ambassadors and protectors of our oceans we have learned to love.

It is really important to work together to raise awareness and understanding on how fragile our aquatic world is and protect it by making a difference. We need to reach out together to straighten our goals and commitment to the conservation of the aquatic environment.” Lem added Elena Lokatskaya, PADI Master Instructor Assistant Manager.
The cleanup project also attempts to break the record for the Most Participants in an Underwater Clean Up (multiple venues) in The Guinness World Record™.
