Dubai, United Arab Emirates | May 31, 2021: Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai's contemporary art institution, presents the fall iteration of Library Circles – a Jameel Library programme that features research and experimental interventions by UAE practitioners. This iteration offers a research display by Maysoon Al Dwairi that opened to the public on May 26 2021, and runs until November 29 2021.
The display, which consists of a selection of readings, recollections of oral histories, an annotated archival presentation and a commissioned text, zeroes in on a crucial moment in the UAE's history – the development of its education systems. The research maps from the 1920s through to the period around the unification of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, grounding these accounts within philosophies of education in the Arab and Muslim worlds.
A core component of Al Dwairi's research centres around the archive collection of Dr Hamad Al Dwairi, Maysoon's father, which he amassed during his time as an educator in the UAE. Dr Hamad holds a PhD degree in Comparative Education & Educational Administration from Ain Shams University in Cairo and now resides in his home country of Jordan.
Maysoon Al Dwairi is an Education Evaluator at the UAE Ministry of Culture. With extensive experience teaching in schools, Maysoon worked as an educational consultant across different emirates in the UAE. She holds a Master's Degree in Education from Deakin University (Australia), an MA in Educational Studies from the Higher Colleges of Technology in Dubai, and a Diploma in Curriculum Design and Development for the Arab States from UNESCO, through Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University.
Jameel Library is holding a series of Meet & Greet sessions with Al Dwairi to shed more light on her storied practice, with the first session taking place on 28 June from 4 – 6 PM at the Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai. Registration is required, as capacity is limited. Visit the Jameel Arts Centre What’s On page for further details.
