OMEGA celebrates the 1-year countdown to the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - 28, July 2019: As the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, OMEGA has today celebrated the 1-year countdown to Tokyo 2020, together with the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. To mark the special occasion, an official countdown clock was proudly unveiled in Marunouchi Central Square in downtown Tokyo.

Measuring almost 4m high, the unique clock has been inspired by the rising sun of Japan, as well as elements of the Tokyo 2020 emblems. On one side, the clock counts down to the beginning of the Olympic Games on the 24th of July, while the opposite side counts down to the beginning of the Paralympic Games, beginning on the 25th of August.

To set the time in motion, Christophe Savioz, President and Representative Director of Swatch Group Japan was joined by Yoshiro Mori, President of the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee; Alain Zobrist, CEO of OMEGA Timing; and John Coates, IOC member.

The list of VIP speakers also included proud representative of the host city, Yuriko Koike, Governor of Tokyo; and Yuji Fukasawa, President and CEO of East Japan Railway Company.

Christophe Savioz said, “I’m particularly proud to represent OMEGA and the Swatch Group in Japan at this incredible time. There is a great feeling of anticipation and excitement that is shared between everyone within the brand as well as the host city.”

John Coates also commented on the event, saying, “We are privileged to share this moment together with OMEGA, a long-standing partner of the IOC. They bring a level of timekeeping precision and experience that is vital to the Olympic Games and all the athletes who compete.”

Alain Zobrist said, “Tokyo is a host city of incredible tradition and modern technology, which are the very same qualities that OMEGA brings to its timekeeping duties. I am sure this will be an Olympic Games to truly remember.”

As a special tribute to tradition, Alain Zobrist also presented Yoshiro Mori with an OMEGA last lap bell. These historic pieces of timekeeping equipment are still used today in certain Olympic Games events and provide a close connection to sport and Swiss-made craftsmanship.

OMEGA is also particularly thankful for the support of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and for the special contribution of East Japan Railway Company, which was a vital partner in support of placing the Countdown Clock in such a key city location.

Tokyo 2020 will mark OMEGA’s 29th occasion as Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games since 1932. As well as recording the dreams of history’s greatest athletes, the brand has continually developed and evolved many of the most sophisticated timekeeping technologies in the world of sport.

In its preparations for next year, OMEGA has also launched two Limited Edition watches in time for the 1-year countdown. Both watches are limited to 2,020 pieces each:

- The Seamaster Aqua Terra Tokyo 2020 Limited Edition is a stainless steel timepiece that features a blue ceramic dial with a laser-engraved pattern inspired by Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games emblem. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games emblem has been beautifully transferred onto the sapphire crystal caseback.

- The Seamaster Planet Ocean Tokyo 2020 Limited Edition is a special tribute to Japan. The polished white ceramic dial continues the Tokyo theme with a special lollipop central seconds hand, to represent the country’s flag. Elsewhere, there is a red liquid ceramic number 20 on the bezel and a sapphire crystal caseback with a transferred Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games emblem.
