December 11, 2017- H.E. Sultan Bin Sulayem, Chairman of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation in Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA), has congratulated the UAE’s wise leadership and the people behind the country’s successful bid for Category B Membership of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Executive Council. This achievement highlights the UAE’s leading position on the world trade map.
H.E. Bin Sulayem said the country’s latest feat comes as no surprise, noting that the UAE has established a strong foothold in the global maritime market under the guidance and unwavering support of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. It is also a step closer towards the goal of UAE Vision 2021 to make the UAE one of the world's most advanced countries.
H.E. Bin Sulayem further said that the latest achievement and other successive accomplishments in the local maritime sector have made the UAE a strong international competitor and one of the most influential countries in the world maritime trade. He added that winning IMO’s Category B Membership is another addition to the global accolades being bestowed on the Emirates as it continues to pursue global maritime leadership backed by its many competitive advantages, world-class capabilities, and top-notch ports, maritime infrastructure, logistics facilities, and shipping and marine transport system.
He added: “We are honored to be part of the development of the local maritime community, especially in the areas of shipping, ports, marine engineering, training, and maritime support services. We will implement and ensure the success of major port expansion projects to further enhance the UAE’s global competitiveness.”
“The historic achievement drives us to continue our relentless efforts to modernize our infrastructure, develop integrated policies and regulatory frameworks, and enhance our capabilities to improve the local shipping and port sectors as well as engineering processes and maritime support based on innovation, knowledge, and smart transformation. We will also continue to implement the Maritime Sector Strategy to build a secure and sustainable maritime sector in support of the country’s economic diversification policy and preparation for a post-oil world,” H.E. further stated.
He concluded: "The historic win reflects the international maritime community’s high confidence in the UAE, an influential player in global trade, transport and shipping. This trust further inspires us to move towards the right direction to further strengthen the UAE’s international position and achieve its ambitions.”
