Sharjah, 7 November 2017: His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council Ruler of Sharjah, has issued a directive to allocate AED 4.5 million for the purchase of new titles from publishing houses participating at the 36th edition of Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF). The books will be distributed to libraries across Sharjah in line with His Highness’s ongoing commitment to enriching public facilities with new resources.
His Highness’s initiative ensures that Sharjah’s public libraries will be updated with new titles that will serve researchers, intellectuals, experts, school pupils, university students and all those interested in literature and culture. It also supports publishers and book industry stakeholders, enabling them to further develop this vital sector.
Sharjah’s public libraries, which are managed by Sharjah Book Authority, are popular centres for the acquisition of knowledge. Their archives and catalogues of books, periodicals, publications and other sources of information are updated constantly through the purchase of books exhibited at SIBF and at other book fairs in the UAE and beyond, as well through direct acquisition from publishing houses and bookstores.
