Connectivity to Propel Kuwait's Knowledge Economy Forward

Huawei teams up with government entities and private enterprises to examine how better connected cities and systems can contribute to future economic competitiveness

Kuwait – February 2, 2016: In today’s knowledge-based economy, the advancement of Kuwait’s information and communication technologies (ICT) sector will help to accelerate the government’s agenda for greater economic productivity, global competitiveness, and enhancing the well-being of its citizens, according to executives from Huawei Kuwait. 

The company recently joined leaders from Kuwait’s public and private sectors to examine new ways in which the digitization of city systems and businesses will be able to foster national socio-economic development in the years ahead. Such discussions were at the forefront of the recently concluded national conference on “Contemporary Roles of Governments in the Knowledge Economy Era”, organized by the Kuwait National Project for Knowledge Economy (NPKE) and held under the Patronage of H.H. Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Emir of Kuwait. 

Huawei outlined how Kuwait is leveraging advancements in telecommunications infrastructure to quickly develop industries such as finance and oil & gas, creating new business opportunities for local firms and attracting investment from foreign firms. Countries across the Middle East, including Kuwait, are also placing greater emphasis on intelligent public safety solutions for incident prevention, emergency response and video-analysis, all of which are powered by more reliable communication systems & devices. 

"Over the last several years the deployment of cutting-edge broadband networks across Kuwait has facilitated the growth of the nation’s digital economy. A better connected Kuwait has remained high on the agenda of government policy makers as they seek to improve efficiencies, diversify industries and develop innovative services for citizens,” says Trevor Liu, CEO of Huawei Kuwait and one of the keynote speakers at the national conference. “Huawei will continue to support Kuwait's development by working closely with local entities to drive the ICT strategy of the Kuwaiti government and contribute even more to the nation’s economic competitiveness."

Over the past decade, Huawei has contributed to Kuwait's agenda for economic diversification through investments in national infrastructure as well as knowledge-transfer initiatives. In 2014, the company launched its flagship Seeds for the Future program to bolster training for top Kuwaiti college students pursuing careers in the ICT sector. The company has also run a variety of research & innovation programs within the country, including a partnership with Zain Kuwait on a first of its kind Joint Innovation Center launched in 2014. 

Under great support from the Kuwaiti government, Huawei was itself one of the first foreign companies to be registered in Kuwait as a full limited-liability company in late 2015. Today Huawei is one of the country’s leading players in the ICT arena working across sectors such as government, telecoms, energy, and many others.
