Dubai, UAE, 28 December 2015: HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), today inaugurated the ‘Health and Safety Week,’ which will be run internally across all DEWA branches, as well as externally at Mirdif City Centre, from 27 to 31 December 2015. The event was attended by DEWA’s EVP's, senior managers, employees, partners, contractors, customers and stakeholders.
The Week aims to enhance health and safety standards and provide an interactive platform to discuss the latest updates related to health and safety. This is in line with DEWA’s integrated administrative systems policy and its commitment towards providing a healthy and safe work environment.
This year’s Health & Safety Week includes a wide range of activities and programmes that appeal to both children and adults. The internal event featured lectures in Arabic, English, Indian, and Urdu for employees and stakeholders regarding health and safety, competitions for contractors on identifying risks, and photography and fitness competitions.
Externally, the Health Safety Week includes lectures on health, safety at school, fire protection, food safety, first aid, home safety, fitness, and road safety. The event features a wide range of activities for children to educate them on the principles of health and safety. These include educational competitions on safety and health, digital caricaturist, Health and Safety Super Hero competition, among others.
“DEWA implements an Integrated Management Systems policy, to further promote a culture of health, safety and sustainability across its divisions and operations. As a socially responsible organisation, DEWA remains fully-committed to providing a healthy and safe work environment to our employees, partners, developers, customers and stakeholders. We believe health and safety standards are not limited to our employees, that's why we are committed to raising these standards among the community at large,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer.
“Our efforts have resulted in DEWA being recognised regionally and globally in the field of health and safety. In fact, we were recently awarded the Sword of Honour for the eighth time in a row and the Globe of Honour for the fourth time in a row, by the British Safety Council. These distinctions were awarded in recognition of DEWA’s excellence in health and safety management and environmental awareness. DEWA is one of seven organisations worldwide to be awarded the Globe of Honour and one of 60 organisations worldwide to be awarded the Sword of Honour. For this year alone, we were one of only seven organisations, globally, who were awarded both. This is why we highly-appreciate the efforts and loyalty of our employees, because without them, none of these pioneering achievements would have been made,” said HE Al Tayer.
“DEWA is committed to implementing the highest international standards of health and safety to provide a happy, safe, and healthy environment for our employees, who are the backbone of DEWA. Such events help educate our employees, making them more aware of health and safety regulations, to avoid any possible dangers, such as injuries and diseases in the work place. This reduces the number of wasted hours, increases productivity and efficiency, and enhances the satisfaction of our employees.” said Dr. Yousef Al Akraf, Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources at DEWA.
DEWA also launched a health and safety awareness campaign across social media channels, to shed the light on the best methods and practices in the field of health and safety, raise levels of awareness within schools, at homes, and on the road. The awareness campaign also covers key topics like nutrition, first aid, fire protection, and fitness.
