Baroness Floella Benjamin, Chancellor of the University of Exeter, sends strong message to VISS students in emotional address
March 5, 2015 – Sharjah, UAE: Baroness Floella Benjamin, Chancellor of the University of Exeter in the UK, has encouraged students at the Victoria International School of Sharjah (VISS) to use their education to help change the world.
The Baroness made an emotional speech in front of senior school students who were engrossed by her messages and inspiration to make a difference. She also talked to the students about their transition to university life and how they can adapt.
Accompanied by Principal Dean Pyrah and the VISS captains, the Baroness praised the student’s English language and storytelling abilities as she made a visit to the nursery and middle school where she participated in interactive class activities.
“Be leaders who can expand your minds and learn about life,” the Baroness said to senior students. “The key to communications is to put yourself in the place of others. No matter what your background is, have goodness in your heart and use your education to change the world.”
The Baroness concluded her speech by sharing valuable life lessons and her philosophy on life, saying: “You must have 4 C’s to advance in life. Consideration for those around you, be content with what you have, have confidence in yourself and courage to do things differently, but always in an ethical way.”
Baroness Benjamin made her name as an actress on British television presenting the popular kids TV show Playschool. She has received an OBE from the Queen of England, along with various other awards including a BAFTA lifetime achievement award for her contribution to television. In 2005, she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Exeter for having had an influence on British society through her work.
VISS offers an Australian curriculum, as well as International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, and provides an extensive extra-curricular program covering a wide range of options for its students. The school has welcomed a number of high profile guests during the academic year who have helped to inspire students to pursue their dreams.
