Abu Dhabi, 3 September 2019: Abu Dhabi’s Department for Transport (DoT) aims to showcase its successful model of standardizing the UAE’s roads when it hosts the World Road Congress Abu Dhabi 2019.
With less than two months’ to go until the prestigious event takes place between October 6 to 10, global experts will be offered an insight into how Abu Dhabi’s extraordinary transformation has helped the UAE receive worldwide recognition for building the best roads.
The DoT has played a significant role to date by delivering an integrated highways and roads network covering more than 25,000km. This has made travelling much easier and accessible to thousands of commuters every day.
Part of its success has been learning from past experiences with their diverse team of engineers initially facing challenges. Issues such as materials not being compatible with the hot climate led to the DoT writing their own technical manuals in 2009 to ensure future construction projects were not impacted.
By undertaking extensive research, a total of 37 manuals have now been published which focuses on the different topics including management, planning, design and construction of roads and related infrastructure.
The award-winning project, which was approved by the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, has become the mandatory guide that all engineers adhere to when constructing projects across the Abu Dhabi Emirate today.
With these manuals in place, it has enabled hundreds of people to enjoy efficient and safe journeys. Drivers have also benefitted from road signage that has been a significant contribution in helping ease congestion and reducing the number of accidents.
During the World Road Congress, road safety will be among the key topics discussed and the DoT has led by example by ensuring high standards have been implemented.
Over the course of several years, the DoT has taken the necessary steps to install more than 110 variable and permanent display signs that are clearly visible, almost 600 CCTV cameras and 70 Video Wall Screens.
The UAE government has played a major role in providing financial support and with this assistance, the DoT launched their own Intelligent Transport Systems. The essential state-of-the-art technology system has been integral in minimizing traffic problems across the city as well as providing thousands of drivers of up-to-date traffic information.
Additionally, as part of its integrated road infrastructure which now has routes to Dubai and the Northern Emirates, Abu Dhabi has provided a platform that ensures efficient journeys for drivers with its easy connections to neighbouring nations like Oman and Saudi Arabia.
Having taken the initiative to standardize the UAE’s roads, the DoT is making huge efforts to bring more conformity to road signs and infrastructure across the UAE and the World Road Congress Abu Dhabi 2019 will showcase these plans to thousands of delegates and business professionals.
The Department of Transport has led the way when it comes to standardizing the roads in the UAE. With the roads becoming the most convenient and accessible method to travel to the GCC, the UAE is proud to maintain these high standards and to be a model for the region. The World Road Congress Abu Dhabi 2019 is an excellent platform to showcase what the UAE has achieved and what it wants to build on going forward.
To be held for the first time in the Middle East, the World Road Congress will be hosted by the DoT and the World Road Association (PIARC) under the theme of 'Connecting Cultures, Enabling Economies'.
The event will emphasize the world-class quality of the UAE’s road infrastructure and showcase Abu Dhabi as the global hub of major events and conferences worldwide.
