University of Turku collaborates with the International Maritime Consortium

Both parties cooperates taking into consideration ship efficiency, environmental protection whilst prioritizing technological capabilities, safe operations and profit commitment
Dubai, UAE, January 13, 2019: Dubai based Zaitoun Green Shipping L.L.C has recently announced that the University of Turku has joined the international maritime consortium as the selected academic partner. The university will further leverage the consortium with the needed expertise and academic research aiming to reduce the investment risks in container ships and creating significant business models.
The international consortium, led by Zaitoun Green Shipping, seeks to collaborate on radically improving performance of container ships and forming a new business model for this market. Theconsortium consists of the top international industry key players such as MacGregor, MitsubishiHeavy Industries Marine Machinery & Equipment, Wärtsilä, Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd,Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT), WIN GD, CargoTech and Carinafour.
Identifying new concept for container ships business
Since Zaitoun Green Shipping’s mission is to protect the marine environment and drive businessgrowth with innovative and smart approaches, the partnership is committed to add the realacademic valued needed for the consortium to drive new business models that will lower the investment risk and ensure ecological and profitableoperations. Eng.Mohammed Zaitoun, President and CEO of Zaitoun Green Shipping explained, “I have witnessed the current industry problems long time back. That’swhy I thoughtabout developing an international maritime consortium of the main industry key players. Our strategic approach can challenge the current modes of operation and significantly increase ships’ economic efficiency while taking into consideration the environmental requirements.”

A distinctive academic role to leverage the consortium
The role of the University of Turku in the consortium is to study different finance and business model options in both the investment and operational phases. Special emphasis is placed on possibilities in value creation by increasing economic and ecological efficiency. Turku School of Economics leads the project at the University of Turku. Commenting on the partnership, Antti Saurama, Director of Corporate Research Co-operation, Turku School of Economics emphasized, “We are very pleased to be working with the leading international corporations in the field and to participate in creating future solutions for container ships which take into consideration both economic efficiency and ecological aspects.”
He added, “The need for new solutions is evident. The global industry has reported a lack of efficiency and poor economic results. At the same time, the decisions of the International Maritime Organization demand emission reductions and implementing new shipping technologies. Ship investments, which have a life cycle of approximately 25 years, have to be planned carefully.”
Zaitoun concluded, “We welcome all the interested parties worldwide to work with us through ourcollaborative consortium seeking together for a smarter and greener shipping future. One of our main goals is to establish a competitive fleet of efficient and economical vessels that will ensure better profitability.”
