Dubai, UAE, December 13, 2016: Philips Lighting (Euronext Amsterdam ticker: LIGHT), a global leader in lighting, together with government partner Dubai Municipality (DM), have been awarded the accolade of ‘Best Government-Private Sector Initiative’ at the Future Cities Awards.
The result of a unique collaboration between Philips Lighting and Dubai Municipality, Dubai Lamp is the world’s first commercially available 200 lumen per Watt LED lamp in a range of four lamps that are most commonly used in homes, consuming only 1,2, and 3 Watt. This breakthrough innovation in LED technology, developed under the directives of Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, underlines Dubai’s commitment to becoming the world’s most sustainable city.
According to Dubai Municipality, two million Dubai Lamps will be supplied for residential and professional use across the city by end of next year and with the support of Philips Lighting the long -term plan is to replace 10 million lamps in Dubai by 2020. Such a transformation in lighting solutions across households and enterprises can reduce energy used for lighting by up to 90 per cent, contributing to a more sustainable world for future generations
Sameer Mohammed Abdul Rahman, Foreign Affairs, partnership department, Dubai Municipality received the award together with Bram Lansink, Head of Marketing, Philips Lighting Middle East & Turkey, who commented on the occasion: “ At Philips Lighting ME we honour our long-term partnerships with the Dubai government by delivering exceptional results on energy savings and quality performance thanks to our world class lighting solutions. Today we celebrate hand in hand with our partner Dubai Municipality, another success that not only makes us proud but also raises the bar for our future projects as it reaffirms the common vision shared with the UAE government and serves as a reminder of our commitment and active role towards smart and sustainable cities and a high standard of living for future generations.”
Earlier this year Philips Lighting announced the launch of its new global five-year sustainability program ‘Brighter Lives, Better World’ aspiring to create a better world where customers can reduce their electricity use by up to 80 percent by accelerating the shift to energy efficient LED and connected lighting systems.
The Dubai Lamp Initiative is part of the company's broader goal and vision to raise public awareness of the need for energy saving and for reduction of carbon emissions and is in line with the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy which targets a 30% reduction in energy consumption by 2030.
