Emirates Metrology Institute Sponsors Light Festival at UAE University in Al Ain

Abu Dhabi-UAE: 3 November, 2015 – Emirates Metrology Institute (EMI), part of Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC), has sponsored the two-day Light Festival hosted the UAE University in Al Ain.
Observed in line with the UNESCO International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL2015), the light festival aimed to inspire and educate youth on the importance of light and optical technologies.
A Light Exhibition featured as a key component of the festival. Showcasing student projects on various applications and experiments related to light and optics, the exhibition included a visual representation of sound, water level indicators, dark detecting LEDs, bending of light. The event also hosted activities such as color, light and brain tests, light painting, light quiz night, LED Throwie Board and an astronomy observation night.
As part of the agenda, a series of talks and presentations under the theme ‘Lighting our Future’ were conducted to examine a spectrum of topics ranging from science and technology to motivation and inspiration. The festival also hosted a workshop for students of different age groups.
Mohammed Helal Al Balooshi, Marketing & Communications Acting Director at Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC), said: “QCC’s association with the Light Festival 2015 highlights the significance of this interdisciplinary event in educating youth on the importance of light in sustaining life on our planet. Our collaboration with UAE University also demonstrates our priority to educate university and schools students about the role of metrology and its various applications in enhancing the competitiveness of our country's economy.”
He added: “At QCC, we are keen to support our leadership’s vision of encouraging students from the engineering, physics, mathematics and chemistry disciplines to hone their skills and become the successful innovators and achievers of tomorrow.
“Through our sponsorship of this event, we seek to establish a long-term collaboration with the UAE University in the area of research and development involving scientific applications related to the measurements. We are also keen to leverage this participation to meet our recruitment demands for graduates specialized in scientific disciplines, particularly for areas related to the core functions of Emirates Metrology Institute (EMI) in the development of cutting-edge metrology infrastructure.”
The Emirates Metrology Institute was established by QCC to provide internationally accredited calibration services to local entities and ensure accurate and internationally compatible measurements in the UAE. EMI facilitates international recognition of the UAE metrology system, provides appropriate information to the public about the national metrology system and offers consultancy to relevant national bodies, industry and the public on metrological issues and on the importance of measurements.
