RTA research shows 80% of accidents are caused by three seconds loss of concentration
Dubai, UAE, 22 March 2015: Porsche Centre Dubai has renewed its partnership with Dubai Police and Sharjah Police in a well-established rewards initiative for safe drivers, just as an official alert says that 80% of accidents are caused by a three seconds loss of concentration.
This week 50 motorists will be recognised by police in Dubai and Sharjah for outstanding displays of safe driving will receive awards of AED1,000 each in the RoadStar contest, which is now in its 17th year.
Porsche Centre Dubai is supporting the campaign for a second year. Officers from Dubai and Sharjah Police driving a Porsche Cayenne Turbo and a Porsche Panamera Turbo will identify the safest drivers during three traffic rush hours each day between 22-26 March.
K. Rajaram, CEO of Al Nabooda Automobiles, the sole distributor for Porsche in Dubai and the Northern Emirates said, “The Porsche Road Star contest is a part of Al Nabooda Automobile’s Corporate Social Responsibility program and it highlights the importance of road safety by recognising and rewarding safe driving.
“This initiative has a proven positive impact on drivers and their circle of friends and family, with members of the public admitting to changing their behaviour and driving habits on the roads as a result of the contest. This validates our belief that rewarding and recognising safe drivers is a highly effective way of creating a culture of road safety.
“Porsche Centre Dubai and Northern Emirates is proud to have joined forces with the Emirates Motor Sports Federation as well as Dubai Police and Sharjah Police to support such a worthwhile cause.”
Drivers singled out by Dubai Police between 22-24 March and by Sharjah Police between 25-26 March receive special safe driving certificates along with their AED1,000 rewards.
Dr. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the Emirates Motor Sports Federation, supporters of the initiative said: “For more than a decade the RoadStar initiative has been doing a great deal to raise road safety awareness in the UAE, and we are very happy to offer our continued support for the ongoing efforts to reduce accidents on our roads.”
The recent RTA alert over small losses of concentration causing accidents has been underlined by the authority’s Traffic Awareness Manager, Deema Hussain, who said: “Our fate is in our own hands and how we choose to drive will determine our safety on the roads. Focusing on the road and paying attention to our surroundings can reduce more than 50 percent of the dangers.”
Organised by Ciel Events, the RoadStar campaign promotes safe driving and rewards motorists who adhere to the basic principles of safe driving, such as wearing seatbelts, using indicators when changing lanes, staying within the prescribed speed limit or using hands-free mobiles.
