10 March 2015, Kuwait City, Kuwait: The latest innovations in heart disease treatment, including revolutionary dissolvable heart stents, were presented at the Kuwait Cardiac Society Conference last week.
According to the World Health Organisation, heart disease is an increasingly serious health issue in Kuwait and is responsible for as many as 40 per cent of all deaths in the country.
Professor Carlo Di Mario, one of Europe’s leading cardiologists, outlined a number of revolutionary techniques and therapies, including dissolvable heart stents, that have been delivered at the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals (RB&HH), the UK’s largest specialist heart and lung centre.
These include dissolvable heart stents – a pioneering practice that treats heart disease by using an implantable device that opens blocked blood vessels and then naturally dissolves in the patient’s body.
RB&HH is one of the first and only hospitals in the world to perform the revolutionary treatment and has, since 2013, treated over 100 patients with excellent clinical results. It works closely with hospitals, specialist medical centres and other health providers in Kuwait and across the Gulf to promote clinical excellence and exchange of international expertise.
“Heart disease is the biggest killer in Kuwait and these innovative treatments can make a real difference to patients,” said Professor Carlo Di Mario, Consultant in Interventional Cardiology, RB&HH.
“The dissolvable heart stent procedure in particular has been a game-changer for the way we treat coronary artery disease and heart attack. The stent is designed to open a blocked heart vessel and eventually dissolve and disappear, leaving no remnants of the procedure. We have already treated hundreds of patients with excellent results, and have welcomed this opportunity to introduce this revolutionary treatment in Kuwait.”
