Postpartum psychosis is a threat to new mothers in the UAE

Women in the Middle East have suffered from depression for many years. It is especially prevalent during pregnancy mainly due to the hormone fluctuations. Conditions such as postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis are a growing focus as these conditions could lead to hospitalization.

Although pregnancy has typically been considered a time of emotional wellbeing, recent studies suggested that up to 20% of women suffer from mood or anxiety disorders during pregnancy. Although there is concern over prescribing medication to pregnant women; depression has a significant risk to the baby and mother. Evidently, the pros and cons of treatment with medication vs. risk of lack of treatment must be weighed out.

“In my practice, I receive, patients per year suffering from postpartum psychosis. Many new mothers, however, due to the nature of the condition, need to be hospitalised. I usually refer them to psychiatric departments in hospitals as opposed to stand-alone outpatient clinics”, commented Dr Abouallaban.

Postpartum psychosis is a severe episode of mental illness that begins suddenly in the days or weeks after having a baby. Symptoms vary and can change rapidly. They can include high mood (mania), depression, confusion, hallucinations and delusions. Postpartum psychosis is a psychiatric emergency and needs to be treated as such.

“Postpartum psychosis is severe due to its symptoms, and it should be treated urgently therefore the patient should seek medical assistance especially in its early stages, especially that it is a potentially a life threatening condition. Urgent care is extremely essential as soon as the patient experiences primary symptoms “concluded Dr Abouallaban.
