Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in collaboration with the Dubai Road Naming Committee, has announced the renaming of Al Faghi Street in Al Khawaneej to Sheikh Zayed Farm Street. The move recognises the national and historical significance of Sheikh Zayed Farm in Al Khawaneej, which His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, declared as the UAE’s third union site, alongside Union House and Arqoob Al Sedira. The designation honours the site’s national symbolism and the important historical meetings it hosted during the founding stages of the United Arab Emirates.
Sheikh Zayed Farm is closely associated with a pivotal chapter in the Union’s history. In March 1971, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan stayed at the farm for nearly two consecutive weeks during which he held a series of meetings and discussions with the Rulers of emirates. These meetings marked a key milestone on the path to establishing the Union and paved the way for the signing of the Union Agreement and Constitution in July of the same year.
The adoption of the new name aligns with Dubai’s drive to commemorate national sites of historical and cultural value, and to link urban features, including roads with landmarks that embody the nation’s memory and development journey. It also strengthens national identity and embeds the UAE’s historical legacy in the hearts and minds of future generations.
Sheikh Zayed Farm stands today as one of the UAE’s most prominent national landmarks owing to its historical and national symbolism and close association with the Union journey. It also carries deep social and cultural significance, reflecting values of authenticity, unity and vision established by the Founding Fathers in building a nation that has become a global model for development, quality of life and stability.
