Waterfront Market's ‘Murals and Art Competition' returns for fifth year, with AED 30,000 Prize Money up for Grabs!

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 30 August 2022: Dubai’s premier fresh-food destination, Waterfront Market, is joining forces once more with Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) for the highly anticipated Murals and Art Competition as part of the Market’s continued efforts of celebrating local homegrown talents.
Returning for its fifth consecutive year, the winning artist will be awarded a valuable prize of AED 30,000 and will unveil their mural at the Waterfront Market as part of the coveted Dubai Art Season (DAS) 2023 organised by the Dubai Culture Authority. The winner of the competition will also join previous year’s winners and have their mural displayed permanently at the Waterfront Market, for the public to enjoy.
This year’s competition’s theme is around the future of Dubai following Expo Dubai 2020 - The World’s Greatest Show and its incredible success of bringing the world together for the largest global gathering since the start of the pandemic. Artists are encouraged to be inspired by the magnitude of Expo Dubai 2020 and unleash their creativity to showcase their vision of what the future of Dubai could look like.
Mohammad Al Madani, Waterfront Market Manager, said: “This year’s theme is all about the future of Dubai, we are leaving the freedom for artists to unleash their creativity and imagine a world after Expo Dubai 2020 in the Emirate. The winner will have their mural proudly displayed in a key location at the Waterfront Market and celebrate them as part of Dubai Art Season (DAS) 2023”.
A panel of judges chosen for their passion in supporting and growing the local art scene including Khalil Abdulwahid Hassan, Director of the Fine Arts Department at Dubai Culture, artist and Waterfront Market’s Senior Marketing Officer Maitha Almarri and Lachlan Gyde, Executive Director – Asset Manager, Ithra Dubai L.L.C will select the winner of the Waterfront Market Murals and Art Competition.
Khalil Abdulwahid Hassan, Director of the Fine Arts Department at Dubai Culture, said: “We at Dubai Culture continuously support and retain local and UAE-based talent and attract creative individuals from around the world by offering them a platform to express their creativity to audiences worldwide. Murals are a part of the Public Art Strategy implemented by Dubai Culture, which aims to make the emirate an open-air museum and a global art exhibition. As such, we are delighted to welcome back this annual competition in celebration of art, artists and the creativity that drives them.”
A success since the outset five years ago, Waterfront Market’s Murals and Art Competition aims to inspire the community and encourage budding artists and art enthusiasts throughout the UAE to engage with the wider creative community.
The annual competition is part of the Waterfront Market’s community-focused initiatives which is embedded in the Market’s DNA and is supported by Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. The deadline for submission of entries is 10th November 2022.
