Go ‘Naked' with Lush

Over packaging of products generates tons of wastage each year, causing a real threat to our planet and environment

Dubai, UAE, September 2016: In just one year, a single person uses up to 200 pounds of plastic, 60 pounds of which is immediately thrown away. Lush recognises that this enormous overuse of packaging is a serious problem and has developed innovative formulations in products and packaging to reduce excessive packaging.

Lush has been actively campaigning the ‘Go Naked' campaign since 2007, striving to eliminate packaging where possible and educating customers to do the same. Currently 38% of Lush's products are package free with more on the way, whilst the remaining products use 100% recyclable packaging. With Lush's stance on being environmentally conscious, they are encouraging retailers and manufacturers to eliminate unnecessary packaging and for consumers to choose naked, unpackaged products.

Lush co-founder Mark Constantine said; “Packaging is rubbish and for too long we have had to suffer excessive amounts of it. Now that the true financial and environmental costs are becoming obvious, customers are challenging manufacturers and retailers to cut the wrap. Companies like ours need to think out of the box and present customers with innovations that allow them to buy truly naked products.”

Lush's innovative products that are completely naked and package free, include; solid shampoo bars, conditioners, soaps, hennas, ballistics, bubble bars and massage bars. One solid shampoo bar saves three 300ml bottles of shampoo, saving millions of plastic bottles from being produced, transported and disposed of. Going naked also increases the likelihood of a product being self-preserving. Solid, naked products like body butters are formulated with little to no water stopping the growth of bacteria, which thrives on water filled products. Whilst versatile ingredients like clay, calamine, kaolin, honey and glycerin can be added without altering the products' solid form. A selection of all- time favourite naked Lush products can be seen below.
