Dubai Health Authority holds 3rd annual conference on violence in healthcare sector

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, February 25, 2015: The Dubai Health Authority recently held the 3rd annual conference on violence in the health sector.

The conference was held under the patronage of His Excellency Engineer Essa Al Maidoor, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority and took place at the Rashid Hospital Medical Library Auditorium

The theme of this year’s conference that attracted over 430 healthcare professionals was, “Working Towards a Violence Free Workplace.”

The aim of the conference was to bring the concept of violence to the surface and educate all healthcare professionals about violence in the workplace and their rights.  Violence is a major concern for many different stakeholders in the health care sector: government, management, professionals, health care workers, insurance companies, clients, educators, trainers, researchers, professional  organizations, and others and this conference addressed the issue of violence in the health setting keeping in mind all these stakeholders.

The conference discussed violence from various perspectives. The aim of the conference was to raise awareness and understand the manifestations and the human, professional and economic implications of violence in the health care sector and to promote effective sustainable initiatives and strategies to create safe environments for workers and clients in the health care sector.

Dr. Renee Thompson from the University of Pittsburgh, a true champion for nurses and the President of RTConnections  provided the keynote address and discussed the theme, “Celebrate Nursing! Human by Birth – Hero by Choice”.

Dr. Samineh I. Shaheem, an expert on Anti-Bullying and Dr. Majid Al Maqbali from Oman  as well as nurses from American Hospital Dubai, King Faisal Hospital Saudi Arabia and DHA covered various aspects of violence including financial impact of violence, passive aggression,  lateral violence etc.
