Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalid Al Nahyan Award Sustainable & Renewable Future Won by AUST Student

Dalia Barrani, student at the College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences attained the first position in the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalid AL Nahyan Awards for her outstanding research. This year the awards encouraged participation along the lines of “Sustainable & Renewable Future”. 

The research submitted by Dalia was aptly titled, “The importance of environmental awareness for students” it stressed the importance of preserving the environment for sustainable development she outlined that in order to achieve its preservation it requires a great deal of effort from all segments of the society. It not only entails the individual efforts but also the efforts exerted by concerned government agencies who oversee the preservation of nature. Most importantly, the education sector plays a vital role in instilling the sense of environmental responsibility in the future generations.

The scope of Dalia’s research is comprehensive and base on theoretical information about the environment and its problem in general and specially related to the UAE. It delved into the causes of pollution and the serious consequences that people face, based on these solutions can be designed to eliminate these environmental issues.

Previous studies and scientific resources were thoroughly studied before addressing the environmental issues faced by United Arab Emirates. The main focus was on air pollution and how to reduce it by regularly monitoring the practices of the community and businesses. A field study was carried out on the school students, University students and their parent. 

Based on the results a conclusion was derived and an awareness program was created which aimed to raise the level of awareness amongst the different strata’s of the society and provide them with facts and figures to convince them of the importance of preserving our environment. The community’s contribution to help save and protect our environment will make for a sustainable future for generations to come.
