Abu Dhabi 8th May, 2014: Corniche Hospital recognized and celebrated the profession of midwifery and the critical role midwives play in the delivery of health care services of the hospital.
The Corniche Hospital management and around 500 plus strong team of midwives and nurses celebrated the International Day of Midwives on 5th of May along with the rest of the world.
Corniche Hospital’s midwives are partners in a strong shared-care model that offers the community with natural birthing experiences for women with normal pregnancy and birth. Each year approximately 8000 plus babies are born at the hospital and most births have a midwife involved in caring for the mother and her baby.
Mariam Buti Al Mazrouei, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operations Officer at Corniche Hospital said, “Midwives play a vital role in the maternal and child healthcare in our hospital. And the International Day of the Midwife is a wonderful way to tell the world what a great job they do. This year’s theme “Midwives changing the word: one family at a time” demonstrates how the education, experience and expertise of a midwife is essential in tackling issues in maternal and newborn health which eventually effects the community at large,” she said.
Women who have recently given birth at the hospital added their voices to the recognition for the role of midwives. Muna Abdi Youssef, a patient at Corniche Hospital was all praise for the Corniche midwifery team. “I did not know the difference between a doctor and a midwife until I started to see a midwife. And I realized how much I missed out on not having midwifery care from the beginning of my pregnancy. The Corniche midwife has changed my whole perspective on pregnancy and childbirth for the better. I would definitely recommend midwifery care to other people as my experience has been extremely positive and enjoyable at Corniche Hospital,” she said.
“Corniche Hospital is immensely proud of the work and commitment of our midwives. By celebrating the International Day of the Midwife, we endeavour to widen the knowledge of this profession, as well as spreading the word about midwifery and its importance in our community. As part of the celebrations, the hospital participated in a community awareness presentation at the Yas Marina Circuit on 7th of May besides holding a celebration lunch and gifts for the hospital’s midwives and nurses,” said Zahra Ali Abdo, Deputy Chief Nursing Officer at Corniche Hospital.
