Dubai’s alternative art scene is about to get more than just a pop of colour, as British artist and self-confessed eccentric Mel Pickup unveils her latest collection. On display at Media One Hotel, Dubai Media City from Wednesday April 9 to Wednesday April 30, ‘Mel Pickup presents Retro Culture’ is a body of work that encompasses a pinch of old Hollywood glamour, a smattering of the superhero and a dab of outer space – with maximum artistic impact.
Mel will host an open launch party on Tuesday April 8 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, where collectors and guests are invited to view the collection in the presence of its quirky creator, on what it set to be a fun and fabulous evening. Including 22 brand new retro pieces, ‘Retro Culture’ is a celebration of the 1980s mindset that the artist holds so close to her heart.
Mel fell in love with all things ‘retro’ 10 years ago, when she began translating the fun and carefree concepts in her head into vibrant visuals. Her unique pieces were very quickly snapped up by art aficionados looking for works to liven up their walls, and put a smile on their face. Mel uses a combination of acrylics, inks, aerosol and collage and, although works predominantly on canvas, has been known to give walls, shopping bags and clutches her ‘Retro Culture’ spin...
“Media One Hotel regularly opens its doors to renowned local artists in a bid to make art more accessible. We have been inspired by Mel’s art, which has been used at many of our events in the recent months; and think that she really makes a unique expression that breaks boundaries in a quirky and humorous way,” stated Mark Lee, General Manager at Media One Hotel.
