Dubai, United Arab Emirates, March 23, 2014: Noor Dubai Foundation, a non-governmental organization based in Dubai, successfully concluded its mobile eye camp in Jhelum, Pakistan that ran from 8th to 15th of March, 2014 and was funded by Dubai Islamic Bank.
The camp was a success despite the heavy rains and floods that took place during the same period.
About 380 people underwent surgery to regain their eyesight and more than 3600 patients were screened in Jhelum.
This is the first mobile eye-camp that Noor Dubai conducted this year and the third in Jhelum and ninth in Pakistan. “We are delighted with the results. The camp in Pakistan witnessed overwhelming response from patients of all ages, many of whom travelled long distances for this opportunity,” said His Excellency Engineer Essa Al Maidoor, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Noor Dubai Foundation and Director-General of the Dubai Health Authority.
According to figures from the World Health Organization (WHO), 6% of visually impaired individuals live in Pakistan.
Dr. Manal Trayam, board member and CEO of Noor Dubai Foundation said: “Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in Jhelum specially among the elderly.”
Speaking of the challenges the team faced during this camp, Taryam said: “We faced unexpected heavy rainfall ; our camp was affected, especially the wards and the operation theatre. We had to stop the surgeries for one day and shift the theater to a safer area.”
Noor Dubai’s team travelled travels across borders to treat some of the world’s poorest populations living in remote areas of Asia and Africa.
