Dubai Municipality recognizes Kehkashan Basu for her achievements

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 3 February 2014: Kehkashan Basu, UNEP's (United Nations Environment Program) youngest Global Co-ordinator for children and youth was presented a certification of appreciation for her work on environment sustainability and waste management, from the Directors of Dubai Municipality; Engineer Salah Amiri, the Assistant Director General for Environmental & Public Health Services Engineer Abdulmajeed Saifaie, the Director, Waste Management Department. The certificate was presented on 22nd January 2014.
Kehkashan, the 13 year old environmentalist and founder of GREEN HOPE UAE, also participated as a delegate at the World Future Energy Summit which took place in the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center, between 20 January and 22 January 2014.
Kehkashan is delighted with the response she received at the World Future Energy Summit as well as being recognized by the Dubai Municipality for her efforts. “At the World Future Energy Summit I got an opportunity to meet His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan - UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs. I spoke to him about my work on sustainability and I was tremendously motivated when he commended and encouraged me to continue my efforts to "inspire" children and youth,” said Kehkashan adding that she also met HE Mr John W. Ashe, the current President of the UN General Assembly.
The Dubai Municipality certification of appreciation was presented to Kehkashan because of her work with them in 2013, which included environmental academics, tree planting at landfills, workshops and awareness programmes on waste management, as well as UNEP's Think.Eat.Save campaign. Kehkashan was also invited on 21st January 2014 to the closing ceremony of the Dubai Municipality's 20th ‘Clean up the World' campaign held at the Intercontinental Hotel , Dubai Festival City , where apart from receiving an award for participation in this campaign , she was the only youth speaker to address the assembled awardees and dignitaries.
About Kehkashan BasuKehkashan Basu is a 13 year old environmental and social activist living in Dubai UAE. Born on 5th June - which is also World Environment Day, she is UNEP's ( United Nations Environment Programme) Global Coordinator for Children & Youth and a member of its Major Groups Facilitating Committee. She is also the Global President of the Children's Board for Plant-for-the-Planet, the Youth Advisor of World Future Council and the Chairperson of the UAE chapter of the International Youth Council. Kehkashan is the founder of a youth organization, GREEN HOPE UAE, which seeks to provide a networking platform to children and youth. She is the recipient of several international awards, notable amongst which are those from UNCCD and Korea Green Foundation in 2012 ,The Living Rainforest, U.K. and most recently the 2013 International Young Eco-Hero award from Action for Nature, USA.
She is a Volunteer with “World Youth Foundation” and a Hub Leader for “Children of the Earth”. In 2010 and 2013 Kehkashan won the prestigious HH Sheikh Hamdan Award for Distinguished Academic Performance. She has won numerous awards in music, public speaking, art, sports and quiz.
