Sovereign to host self-portraits by MF Husain and Dubai school children

- Rare collection of self-portraits by MF Husain showcases 9 decades of his life

- Incomparable self-portraits by 7-to-11-year olds pay tribute to the artist

Dubai, UAE - November, 2013:   Sovereign, one of Dubai's newest art galleries, will host two exceptional exhibitions to mark ‘A Season of Self-portraits' from November to December 2013.

MAQBOOL will commemorate the birth centenary of MF Husain, with a carefully curated collection of 25 of his self-portraits. Maqbool Fida Husain (1913 - 2011), who was associated with Indian modernism since the 1940s, went on to become the most celebrated and internationally recognised Indian artist of the 20th century. “Although Husain was one of the world's most prolific artists (with an estimated body of 60,000 paintings), his self-portraits are hard to come by, and rarely seen together,” says Dadiba Pundole, curator and gallery owner of Sovereign. “This is an exceptional chance for art lovers to appreciate the scale, size, and splendour of his works.”  MAQBOOL will run from 21 November to 12 December.

As a precursor and in tribute, MIRROR IMAGES will feature self-portraits by 7-to-11-year old students of Dubai International Academy (DIA). “Nothing could be more apt as a celebration of MF Husain's birth centenary, than this artistic ode by school children,” says Anupama Ramachandran, Art Teacher at DIA, who supervised a two-month process with students who created the self-portraits   “Throughout his lifetime, Husain championed talent that is unfettered, untrained, and uninhibited - and this is exactly what the children's art reveals.”  MIRROR IMAGES will feature the art of 40 children, and will run from 14 to 17 November.
