Dubai, 26 May 2026: Dubai is set to take centre stage in the gaming industry as the Dubai Esports & Games Festival (DEF) 2026 gets underway, spotlighting gaming not only as a fast-growing sector, but as a space where players can build valuable real-world skills.
Organised by Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), part of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), the festival runs from 22 May to 7 June, featuring a diverse programme with over 300 gaming experiences across more than 10 zones.
Part of the festival includes the Education and Gaming Summit on 4 June that will bring together students, universities, and global industry leaders to unlock meaningful pathways into the gaming sector.
Today, gaming is increasingly recognised for its ability to build skills that translate into real-world environments.
Here are some fields of gaming that individuals can learn about and the skills required, simply by attending workshops at the Summit.
- Game development: Among the workshops taking place on the day is the development of games with this real-world skill combining technical, creative, and problem-solving abilities that can be directly transferable to many industries.
- Content creation: Can help people develop communication and creativity skills, and also teach confidence, teamwork and problem-solving.
- Professional gaming: Helps build skills such as communication, teamwork, leadership, planning, strategic-thinking and problem-solving.
The festival aligns with Dubai’s broader ambitions under the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 to strengthen the emirate’s leadership within future-focused sectors including technology, gaming and digital innovation.
Muna Al Falasi, Director of Esports and Games Strategy at Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), said: “The complexities of gaming today help develop a huge range of skills that can be applicable across multiple real-world scenarios and the DEF Education and Gaming Summit will put some of these in focus in the presence of more than 1,000 attendees. People will learn that when players are in action, they are developing everything from communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills through to reaction time and hand-eye coordination.
“Dubai Esports & Games Festival highlights this potential, with GameExpo offering a platform for people to engage, develop, and experience these skills in action. We encourage as many people to attend, especially the DEF Education and Gaming Summit.”
The DEF Education and Gaming Summit on 4 June will connect students with industry experts, offering insights into the academic and career pathways within the gaming sector. It is the perfect platform for those who want to pursue a career in gaming to attend and learn what skills are needed to succeed. People can register for free by visiting www.defeducationsummit.com
Among the highlights of DEF is GameExpo from 5 to 7 June, bringing together gaming, esports, entertainment, food, retail and fan culture in one dynamic space at Dubai World Trade Centre.
Tickets are now available for the flagship event from AED29, where visitors can play, compete, watch, and explore, all under one roof in a fully immersive environment.
