Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police honoured the winners of the Road Safety Film Festival competition, which focused on the causes and risks of traffic accidents. Dedicated to university and postgraduate students, the competition aimed to highlight the main causes and dangers of traffic accidents. Organised in coordination with Dubai Police General Headquarters, it sought to encourage young people to present innovative ideas underscoring the importance of safe driving and to inspire the community to adopt responsible road behaviours.
Launched in April as part of the traffic awareness pillar of RTA’s Traffic Safety Strategy, the competition aligns with RTA’s efforts to promote a culture of road safety, continuously enhance community awareness, reduce accidents and injuries, and reinforce the concept of safe and responsible driving among all segments of society.
Hussain Al Banna, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, praised the high level of professionalism and precision reflected in the films produced for the competition. During the student recognition ceremony held at RTA headquarters, he announced that these films will be featured in RTA’s traffic awareness programmes and initiatives, particularly those targeting youth and university students.
Al Banna said: “The competition revealed promising potential and diverse talents among young participants who successfully transformed the main themes into impactful films addressing societal issues by linking the negative consequences of traffic accidents to their human and social dimensions.”
He added: “RTA identified the film topics based on recent traffic statistics, which showed that sudden swerving and failure to leave a safe distance—often caused by driver distractions—are among the leading causes of serious traffic accidents resulting in fatalities. The competition also included a category focusing on the behaviours of cyclists and e-scooter users due to the increasing number of users and the growing popularity of these modes of transport in recent years.”
Al Banna commended the winners across the three categories and praised all participants for their engagement, noting that such interaction helps enhance social awareness and reflects young people’s keenness to promote and contribute to a culture of road safety.
The judging panel, comprising representatives from RTA and Dubai Police General Headquarters, confirmed that the winning films met all competition criteria and achieved high scores based on the evaluation standards announced on RTA’s website. These standards included clarity of concept and objective, scientific research, creativity and innovation, cinematic production quality, and the film’s overall impact on viewers. The panel also praised the participants’ skills and professionalism in producing powerful short awareness films that effectively illustrate the main causes leading to traffic accidents.
