Alessandro Covi took a fine result in challenging conditions today, taking 3rd at the Trofeo Laigueglia in Italy.
The riders had to endure wet conditions throughout the 201km race which was won solo by Frenchman Nans Peters (Ag2r-Citroen) who broke away at -29km.
These damp road conditions meant several riders crashed including Covi who came down at -38km to go.
Covi was able to remount and rejoin the front group and went out in pursuit of the lone leader at -10km to go, taking seconds off the lead which hovered around the minute mark. Though lack of collaboration behind and the presence of many Ag2r-Citroen riders would prevent any cooperation in the group.
Despite his efforts Covi still managed to outsprint most of his rivals in the 7 man chasing group, with only Andrea Vendrame coming past him in the dash for the line.
Covi: “Thanks very much to my team for their work today. It was a tough day with the crash mid-way through the race that set me back. The weather conditions made it challenging to execute our race plan, but we stuck together and produced a strong result. Hopefully we can carry the momentum with this podium in to the busy upcoming race schedule.”
Trofeo Laigueglia results:
1.Nans Peters (Ag2r-Citroen) 5:03:38
2.Andrea Vendrame (Ag2r-Citroen) +55’’
3. Alessandro Covi (UAE Team Emirates) +55’’
