Dubai, United Arab Emirates, February 2, 2022: Doctors at the Dubai Health Authority saved the life of a 36-year-old GCC national who suffered a dissected aorta.
DHA doctors conducted a complex surgery that lasted eight hours at Dubai Hospital, during which the aorta was replaced and blood was reperfused to other arteries in the brain, intestines, kidneys and heart.
The patient was attending a New Year Eve Celebration, when he felt sudden chest pain; he was admitted to the DHA’s field hospital that was especially put in place to address any medical emergencies during the New Year Eve celebration.
The patient was rushed to Rashid Hospital’s Trauma and Emergency Centre
After all the necessary examinations, accurate diagnosis and stabilization, the patient was urgently transferred to the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Dubai Hospital.
Dr. Ayman Majzoub, Emergency Medicine Specialist at Rashid Hospital, said that the patient’s condition required urgent medical intervention to save his life. The medical team began conducting all the necessary tests, including CT scans, which confirmed the presence of a dissected aorta and the need for immediate surgical intervention.
He said that in a majority of such cases, the patient dies before reaching the hospital or within 24 hours of reaching the hospital, in the absence of urgent medical invention and accurate diagnosis.
He highlighted that Emergency Doctors collaborate closely with doctors from various departments in the hospitals and other DHA hospitals to provide the highest quality of timely multidisciplinary care and treatment.
He highlighted that coordination between emergency doctors at Rashid Hospital and the various medical departments in the authority's hospitals, including Dubai Hospital, ensures timely specialized care. In this case, the patient was immediately referred to the doctors of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at Dubai Hospital for urgent surgical intervention.
Dr Obaid Al Jassim, Consultant and Head of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at Dubai Hospital said that the medical team immediately conducted all the necessary tests and extensive preparation that is needed prior to such a complex surgery.
He said the surgery was particularly complex as the patient had a dissected aorta which means blood supply was affected to all the main organs of the body including the heart, brain, kidneys and all the intestines.
The procedure took 8 hours, during which doctors replaced the affected aortic valve and the main part of the aorta and conducted re-implantation of the coronary arteries and arteries of the brain.
Al Jassim said: “We first put the patient on a heart-lung machine which is a device used in open heart surgery to support the body’s circulation and oxygenation during the surgical procedure while the heart is stopped. We then lowered the body temperature to 18 degrees to protect the patient’s brain and we did some procedures to ensure the brain receives oxygenated blood during surgery.”
He said that the patient stayed in the Intensive Care room for 48 hours post-surgery, after which doctors removed his ventilator and he was shifted to the recovery room prior to discharge.
He will require regular six-monthly follow-up visits, in addition, he has to maintain a healthy lifestyle and manage his blood pressure and blood sugar.
Dr Al Jassim said that in such cases, the probability of death increases by 5% every hour without urgent medical intervention.
A multidisciplinary team led by Dr Obaid Al Jassim performed the surgery. The team included Dr. Mustafa Fawzi Mustafa, Senior Specialist Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. Tariq Abdul Aziz, Senior Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Dr. Muhannad Al Asaad, Cardiothoracic Surgeon. A team of consultant anesthesiologists included Dr. Yahya Qarali and Dr. Muhammad Fayyad.
Dr Al Jassim said that medical expertise, a multidisciplinary team, continuous medical education and advancement, as well as the adoption of the latest and smart technologies are factors that ensure provision of highly advanced and specialized care.
