October 04, 2021: With the United Arab Emirates (UAE) opening its doors to the world at Expo 2020, Dubai, ABB – one of the world’s leading technology companies, looks back at 45 years of success in the country and commits to advancing the UAE’s transformative projects through electrification, robotics, automation and motion technology.
As a company with Swedish heritage, ABB will commemorate its success and present its future outlook as an official partner of the Sweden Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, showcasing its industry-leading technology essential to building a smart society. ABB is set to highlight innovations under the pavilion’s theme of ‘Co-creation for Innovation’, including a specially adapted robot that helps turn plastic waste into furniture.
On 13th December, the company will celebrate ABB Day with its key stakeholders, including its partners, customers, and employees. ABB will also join in the festivities to celebrate Sweden Day at Expo 2020 Dubai on 15th December. During the six-month run of Expo 2020 Dubai, passengers traveling via Dubai International Airport and Dubai Metro will discover how ABB delivers on its ‘Let’s write the future. Together.’ brand promise.
Björn Rosengren, Chief Executive Officer at ABB, said, “We congratulate the UAE’s visionary leadership on the successful opening of Expo 2020 Dubai. At ABB, we are dedicated to aligning with the future aspirations of the countries in which we operate, and we look forward to further growing our relationship with public and private entities in the UAE.”
“As a true partner of progress with the UAE for more than four decades, we recognize the need for constant innovation, leveraging the best of electrification and automation to help the nation maintain its leading position on the world stage. We look forward to meeting decision-makers at Expo 2020 Dubai, working together to solve challenges and forge a smarter future,” Rosengren added.
Prominent milestones across 45 years
ABB’s first significant cooperation in the UAE focused on enabling the efficient supply of desalinated water. As the UAE increased investments in large-scale projects, ABB later supported the automation of Dubai International Airport and began powering Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah.
Owing to its expertise in powering metro stations globally, including the Delhi Metro and Guangzhou and Shenzhen Metro lines, ABB was chosen to power the Dubai Metro – the first automated metro system in the Middle East. The partnership with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) witnessed ABB design and install Substation Control and Monitoring Systems (SCMS) for Dubai Metro’s gas-insulated switchgear substations.
ABB also installed the electrical power systems to keep the world’s tallest building running 24/7. The Burj Khalifa features the world’s highest substation, enabling the building’s facility management team to monitor the power supply of 400 electrical loads at the site, including 57 elevators and a 24 megawatt (MW) air conditioning system.
