Chronoswiss Flying Regulator Wins Coveted Red Dot Design Award

20 April 2017 - Dubai, UAE: Chronoswiss’ Flying Regulator mechanical wristwatch, won the coveted Red Dot award for outstanding design 2017, which is the most sought-after seal of quality recognized globally.

The Flying Regulator plays with horological traditions and takes them to a new dimension. A regulator clock shows hours and seconds in a decentralized manner, which was popular in the late 19th century, in particular for wall clocks and standing clocks. 

Due to the first Régulateur wristwatch created by Chronoswiss in 1988, this watch type quickly became popular and developed into the flagship of the brand. Now Chronoswiss is presenting the Regulator dial in a “3D” version: with a floating minute scale and subdial for hours and seconds, which is held in the air by an elaborate construction on screw-fastened bases. 

The technical changes required for the new design include, among other things, a specially-developed bezel and curved sapphire crystal that optimally accentuates the three-dimensionality. The complex wicker Guilloche pattern on the lower level was designed on an historic rose-engine machine in our in-house studio. Due to the sapphire glass base (a horological accomplishment by Chronoswiss), you can observe the C.122 movement, which was also used for the brand´s first automatic Regulator watch. Thus, the Flying Regulator is a feast for the eyes no matter what the angle.

The significance of the international design competition, Red Dot Award: Product Design, with its headquarter in Essen, Germany is well established internationally. It was already more than 60 years ago that a jury convened for the first time to assess the best designs of the day. Since then, an expert team has been awarding the seal of quality for good design and innovation to the outstanding designs of the year.

The jury of around 40 independent designers, design professors and specialist journalists tested, discussed and assessed each individual product. In total, the competition received more than 5,500 entries from 54 countries this year.
