Dubai Wholesale City Begins to Take Shape with Commencement of Infrastructure Works

• Excavation starts at leading global wholesale trading hub
• 15 km dual carriageway to connect Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road
• Abdulla Belhoul: Construction marks new chapter for global wholesale hub
• Dubai Wholesale City, the global integrated wholesale trading hub, and a member of TECOM Group, has announced the beginning of excavation works during a ceremony that was attended by Abdulla Belhoul, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Wholesale City, as well as representatives from TECOM Group; senior officials, employees of Dubai Wholesale City and representatives from the appointed contracting company.

Dubai Wholesale City appointed Port Saeed Transport & Building Contracting Company to execute site works which will include, levelling, grading and excavating, spanning over 135 million square feet, which will move substantial volumes of sand and soil across the premises; enough to fill 10,000 Olympic pools.

The largest integrated trading hub will also accelerate the pace of the infrastructural work by executing the development operations alongside the grading. This comes as a response to the great demand the city received from investors after recently accepting applications from companies and traders interested in booking space. The Infrastructural work is expected to be completed within the first year.

Port Saeed Transport & Building Contracting Company’s scope also includes constructing a 15 kilometre dual carriageway that connects two major highways in the UAE - Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road – which complements a number of projects undertaken by the Roads and Transport Authority, to create a wider roadmap to Expo 2020 site. The new road will also link the main components of Dubai Wholesale City that serve various sectors such as food, building materials, electronics, machinery, equipment and others.

Speaking at the ceremony, Abdulla Belhoul, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Wholesale City, said: “The commencement of construction on this mega project marks a new chapter in transforming our vision into reality. Once complete, Dubai Wholesale City will leverage Dubai’s strategic geographical position to emerge as a key player in global wholesale trade.”

He added: “Following the launch of Dubai Wholesale City by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, we have worked to outline a long-term roadmap for the successful implementation of the project. Through several carefully considered steps, we plan to carry out and achieve the goals of this development and see it emerge as a wholesale trading hub of choice in the region and across the world. Dubai Wholesale City is well geared to further accelerate the contribution of the industrial sector to the national economy and elevate the status of Dubai and the UAE on the international trading map.”
