Sharjah-based photographers’ union celebrates the magic and beauty of black and white photos
Sharjah, UAE, October 15, 2016: A showcase of 50 black-and-white images by the Sharjah-based Union of Arab Photographers is one of the key exhibits at XPOSURE 2016 that concludes today (Saturday) at Expo Centre Sharjah.
Organised by Sharjah Media Centre (SMC) under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the event features the works of internationally acclaimed photographers under the theme, My Imagination. My Shot.
The Union’s Executive Committee, comprising Adib Shaaban, Sabah Al-Hamasi, Yousef Bin Shakar Alzaabi, Saeed Jumoh, Karim Sahib, and Sulaiman Bin Eid, curated the exhibit that includes their own works as well as shots by guest photographers. Their selection represents the best of 661 photos that appear in the book, 101 Black-and-White Artworks, published by the Union.
Commenting on the festival, Alzaabi said: “Sharjah Media Centre plays a pivotal role in organising events focused on various aspects of the media industry and was keen to invite the Union of Arab Photographers to participate in XPOSURE 2016. Putting a spotlight on photo journalism, the festival is a platform where we can draw inspiration from the best work of international photographers. The initiative also underlines the role played by the emirate of Sharjah in promoting the arts, literature, culture and photography.”
He added: “We have created a truly special exhibit that celebrates the talent of photographers from the Arab region. The selection of images is consistent with the guidelines set by the festival management as well as the standards of image composition, lighting, and comprehensiveness of subject and expression in general. Highlighting the beauty of black-and-white photos, it also demonstrates how to use camera settings in harmony with nature to convey the depth of these dramatic images.”
The exhibit features various sections including Portrait Photography, Arabian Life, Wildlife and Marine Life, Conceptual Photography, People’s Public Lives, as well as Buildings and Roads. Showcasing a wide range of monochrome shades, the carefully handpicked works pay homage to the beauty of life.
Sharjah’s first international photography festival is being viewed as a landmark event in the annual calendar of activities for the Union of Arab Photographers. In addition to bringing together top professionals from around the world, it gives the participants a credible platform to compete with the best in global events and trade exhibitions. The exhibit has captured the attention of the visitors, who have expressed their admiration for the distinctive works presented by the Union.
XPOSURE is Sharjah’s official photography, educational and imaging platform. Supported by industry experts, the festival features exhibitions, free seminars, technical workshops, presentations, photo walks, a trade show, and keynote addresses by renowned local and international photographers. The platform also offers exciting opportunities to learn new skills and network with leading professionals and like-minded enthusiasts, along with the chance to see and try the latest photographic products.
As a fitting culmination to the four-day festival, XPOSURE 2016 will draw the curtains today (Saturday) with a special awards ceremony for winners of competitions held as part of the event.
