RAK Hospital the first in the UAE to launch gyroscope-based technology for more accurate alignment in knee replacement surgeries
Renowned orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Yash Gulati will be at the helm of the procedure
The cost-effective technique will increase shelf life of the implant, reduce post-operative discomfort, and allow lesser blood loss and quick recovery
Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, June 5, 2016: In yet another breakthrough development, RAK Hospital becomes the first hospital in the UAE to introduce gyroscope-based technology for a more accurate alignment in knee replacement surgeries. The technique, applied in few hospitals world over, not only reduces post-operative discomfort, allowslesser blood loss and shorter recovery period, but also increases the shelf life of the implant significantly. Led by renowned orthopaedic surgeon and Padma Shri recipient, Dr Yash Gulati, the quick surgery will be cost-effective and particularly beneficial for older people, those with weak knees and knee injuries. The procedure is even more useful when treating complex deformities.
The UAE has seen rising cases of orthopaedic issues – primarily stemming from obesity – even among younger men and women, necessitating the need for a knee implant at an earlier age.
Typically used in aircrafts for navigation, automatic pilots and in stabilisers, gyroscope is a spinning wheel or disc in which the axis of rotation is free to assume any orientation by itself. Using this device, surgeons at RAK Hospital will now be able to accurately place or angulate the bone at a proper plane, and allow a far precise, near-perfect angle for incision. With the help of this cutting-edge computer-assisted procedure, the surgery-time also reduces considerably – about 30 minutes.
“The gyroscope technique is very effective, especially for people who have a low threshold for pain. This also gives them the encouragement to opt for surgeries and add value to their life,” commented Dr Yash Gulati, visiting consultant at RAK Hospital and Senior Consultant at Apollo Hospital in New Delhi, “It is a pin less technique based on Wi Fi and is huge improvement on previous technology. There are no additional incisions, and ideally a patient who undergoes the surgery can stand up the very day of the operation, and leave the hospital by the fourth day at the latest. Accurate placement of implants is likely to increase longevity of the implant from the 15 to 20 years that was achieved with older techniques. It is also relatively economical and uses less equipment.”
Raza Siddiqui, CEO Arabian Healthcare Group and Executive Director of RAK Hospital, said: “Medical technology is advancing by leaps and bounds, and we at RAK Hospital are proud to say that we are keeping up with times. We have been extremely fortunate to work with few of the best doctors in the region and abroad, who are complementing our state-of-the-art infrastructure with their skill set and expertise. And together, we are doing our best to bring convenience and comfort to our patients.”
RAK Hospital has always been at the forefront of launching new technologies and adding value to the UAE healthcare sector. Earlier this year the hospital introduced life-saving,non-surgical balloon dilation procedure, and was the first to launch ‘zero technique’ ten-minute Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgery last year, among many other initiatives.
