Harvard Professor to host free full day training program in Dubai

Session will cover oral expressions and teaching written expression
Dubai, UAE – 24 February 2016: Lexicon Reading Centre, a Dubai based learning center that offers education therapy services and provides support for children who learn differently, will host a free full-day workshop in Dubai tomorrow with Dr. Charles Haynes (Ed.D), an industry expert from the United States.
Titled “Narrative and Expository Strategies for Scaffolding Oral Expressions and Writing”, the workshop will feature lectures, discussions and problem-solving activities with the goal of exploring word, sentence, and discourse level strategies for supporting oral and written comprehension and expression. Other topics include systematic methods to use when leveraging key language learning skills when speaking, listening, writing and reading to enhance comprehension of narrative and expository text. This will be hands-on and be practical-oriented.
The workshop will also provide participants with innovative research-based strategies and problem solving activities. The session is for basic-to-intermediate level and is designed for classroom teachers, speech-language therapists, reading specialists and parents with basic knowledge of terms for components of reading and oral language.
Dr. Charles Haynes is a Boston-based clinical supervisor at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. He is an alumna of the Harvard Graduate School of Education from which he received his doctorate in Reading Language and Learning Disabilities and holds a MS in Speech-Language Pathology. Haynes possesses over thirty years’ experience in handling dyslexic adolescents and has authored over forty publications on applied and theoretical topics related to language learning development and disabilities.
He is the 2014 recipient of the International Dyslexia Association presented alongside the Margaret Byrd Rawson Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the field and for his support of people with dyslexia and related language learning difficulties.
Rudolf Stocking, Clinical Director of Lexicon Reading Centre, said: “We are honoured that someone of Dr. Haynes’ standing will be giving the lecture and are confident that his Harvard background will attract plenty of interest to this event. He will provide a fresh perspective to UAE-based teachers and educators in order to bring their teaching strategies to another level and further assist their students while teaching.”
Professor Nancy Cushen White (Ed.D), Clinical Professor at the University of California, will also be present at the event to train attending teachers and educators.
Participants will be the recipients of PowerPoint handouts, two key PDFs and supplementary references. Those interested in acquiring a certificate will need to pay a fee of AED 75 dirhams.
The workshop will take place tomorrow, Wednesday 24 February, at Almas Tower Conference Centre, in JLT from 9AM to 5PM.
