Al Ghurair Centre's urban art jam StreetCon 2015 is back for its second year in the heart of the city
Last Update: Saturday, April 25, 2015 : 13:22 (+4GMT)
International street artist Eduardo Kobra will bring color to the streets of Deira along with over 20 local artists
The original urban art jam StreetCon 2015 is back from 23rd April to 2nd May. This years’ event will see the inner roads along Al Ghurair Centre transformed into an open air urban art gallery.
Visitors will be immersed in the urban art scene as they explore live interactive graffiti walls, photography exhibitions, art installations and public art pieces lining the streets.
Headlining this year’s festival is renowned street artist Eduardo Kobra, famous for his stunning ‘Walls of Memory’ project. Having transformed the urban landscape of Sao Paolo to help rescue the memory of the city, he is now set to do the same in Deira.
“We are very happy to be a part of StreetCon and to be able to pay homage to the urban art scene in such a wonderful country,” said Kobra.
“I use my work to recreate a city that no longer exists, so people who didn’t live in that time can see it and those who did can have a moment of memory or nostalgia. Creating a mural in a vibrant, dynamic and exciting city like Dubai is a welcomed new challenge for me."
Another StreetCon 2015 highlight will be Alan Parkinson’s breath-taking Architects of Air showing off their impressive Miracoco Luminarium. A remarkable maze of winding paths and soaring domes, Miracoco is one of the most visually exciting luminaria and an inspiring monument to the beauty of light and colour. Designed to give up to 80 people at one time an ephemeral sensory experience, the 1,200 square-metre labyrinth of light, colour and music will be in the open air car park on Al Rigga Road.
Thousands of people are expected to flock to Al Ghurair Centre for the 10-day event, one of the mall’s signature events and a highlight of Dubai’s cultural calendar.
As well as a chance to experience the work of acclaimed street artists, visitors will get to try their hand at new techniques by joining workshops or test their skills at interactive drawing stations and enjoying live music, b-boy competitions and the city’s hottest DJ’s playing sets throughout the ten days.
The creative talents of local artists will get a chance to shine, as Al Ghurair Centre unveils the final art pieces from its recent Public Art Commission. Their work, selected by a panel of esteemed judges, will be on display in and around the streets of the mall.
StreetCon forms part of Al Ghurair Centre’s aim of establishing itself as an urban precinct, where customers can relax in outdoor areas and enjoy street performances, local art displays and interactive activities.
David Thurling, VP Malls for Al Ghurair Properties, added: “Al Ghurair Centre continues to invest in art, music and culture to cement our position as the cultural hub and heart of Deira.
“StreetCon is a huge part of this investment, helping to attract new visitors to this cultural heart of Dubai whilst providing an interactive opportunity for people of all ages to connect with art and get enthused about it in all its forms.”
StreetCon 2015 will take place daily from 4pm to 10pm on the inner roads between mall entrances 3 and 4 (near the Dome cafe and Spinney’s). Miracoco will be open daily from 3 pm on the open air carpark along Rigga Road at Al Ghurair Centre in Deira. Nearest metro stations include Union Station and Salahuddin.
