Students get up close to ICC Cricket World Cup trophy
Children from the Victoria International School of Sharjah (VISS) had a unique opportunity to see one of world sport's biggest prizes – the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 trophy.
The trophy has been in the UAE as part of ‘Victoria Week', a week-long programme that includes a host of activities and events to promote the best the Australian state of Victoria has to offer the Middle East across trade and investment, food and beverage, tourism and sport.
Bringing the iconic silverware to the school was John Harnden, CEO of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Local Organizing Committee, and John Butler, Victorian Commissioner to the Middle East and Africa and Turkey. They were welcomed and shown a tour of the school and cricket facilities by Dean Pyrah, Principal of VISS.
Young stars showed their talents in the cricket nets in front of the visitors and 25 students from across grades 3-12 also had the chance to ask questions about the tournament to MrHarnden.
Melbourne, the capital of the Australian state of Victoria, will play host to five matches during the ICC Cricket World Cup, including the final at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground. The UAE team has qualified for cricket's pinnacle 50-over tournament which will be held in Australia and New Zealand from 14 February and 29 March.
