Summer Streets on Regent Street: Visitors embrace urban art in Regent Street

Regent Street, London W1, was gloriously warm for its second consecutive traffic-free Sunday this month as part of the “Summer Streets” programme in partnership with the Mayor of London. The street embraced urban art as part of the weekend's Sensroy Perception theme.

Other activity included performances by Big Dance Pledge, created by English National Ballet artists Laura Harvey and Jenna Lee, set to a soundtrack created by DJ Danilo Walde, a Mass Participation Chalk Drawing run by Urban Canvas and free yoga classes led by The Third Space Soho. A flashmob choir from the world renowned London Chorus, Summer Street's resident jazz band and the Regent Street acrobats sponsored by Uniqlo, Toddle in the City where children and parents are able to capture the best views of Regent Street on the special kiddi-proof cameras continues to delight participants each Sunday.

Next Sunday will be The Street is My Catwalk in association with the V&A, when visitors will be encouraged to “strut their stuff” on the street's 100m catwalk. There will be six catwalk shows throughout the day, each with a different theme: Streetwear, Sportswear, Eveningwear, Wedding; Sunday Best, and Anything Goes. The catwalk shows will be stage managed and accompanied by music to offer budding models and fashion enthusiasts the opportunity to show off their own style and experience being part of a professional runway show.

Annie Walker, Director of the Regent Street Association said: “The second week of Summer Streets proved even more popular than the first. We saw  shoppers flock to Regent Street who were delighted with the traffic free environment and the pop up entertainment.  Many of the retailers reported increased sales and the restaurants in Heddon Street and Swallow Street, Regent Street's Food Quarters saw record numbers on one of the hottest summer Sundays this year.  Everyone is looking forward to the next two Sundays; the theme being ‘The  Street is My Catwalk' and the following week ‘A Garden in Regent Street'. ”

Summer Streets makes the area a more pleasant experience for residents and visitors alike, enhancing the environment for shoppers and sightseers to enjoy this central location in the heart of the West End.
