COMMUNITY FAIR TRADE
In 1987, The Body Shop launched Community Trade.
One of the first examples of fair trade, Community Fair Trade as it is now called, has numerous benefits for our company, our customers and our suppliers.
Through our long term trading relationships, we do more than give a fair price. We offer our suppliers a predictable and regular income for their family and the security and confidence to develop their own businesses. In turn we can access some of nature's finest ingredients, which are grown and harvested by expert local farmers, and our accessories are made using time-honored techniques, helping to preserve a traditional way of life.
Wherever possible, we seek to use Community Fair Trade ingredients in our products. In the process, Community Fair Trade allows our suppliers to build better futures for themselves and their communities.
Today our programme benefits over 300,000 people with 25 projects, in 21 countries worldwide, who supply us with 26 of our naturally derived ingredients supplying over 65 different gifts and accessories.
WHY IS COMMUNITY FAIR TRADE IMPORTANT?
How people choose to spend their money directly affects the lives of people all over the world. Community Fair Trade gives our customers the chance to spend their money where it will make the most positive difference, helping support communities and bringing about important social change.
The Community Fair Trade programme is a way of enabling trade to bring about community and individual development, ensuring trade benefits those who most need it.
In the image we can see, Wonderful natural shea and the women from Ghana..
Local women hand-harvest shea nuts, dry them in the sun and crack them to extract the kernels. These are roasted and ground into a paste to make the butter. Trade with the Tungteiya Women's Shea Butter Association has helped them to fund three medical centres and 10 nursery schools.
