International recognition highlights the hotel’s dedication to sustainable hospitality and meaningful luxury experiences
Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 16 July 2026: Sofitel Dubai Downtown has been awarded the internationally recognised Green Globe Certification, marking a significant milestone in the hotel’s sustainability journey and reaffirming its commitment to responsible hospitality in support of the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 vision.
The hotel was awarded certification following an independent sustainability audit conducted by Farnek Green Globe’s preferred partner in the MENA region, recognising the Sofitel Downtown Dubai’s continued efforts to place environmental responsibility at the heart of its operations while delivering the refined guest experiences that define the Sofitel brand.
As a part of the assessment, the hotel successfully met more than 380 sustainability indicators, complementing Accor’s GAIA 2.0 platform, which measures, benchmarks and optimises the environmental performance of more than 5,700 properties worldwide.
Commenting on the achievement, Muna Al Nahdi, Director - Sustainability & Consultancy at Farnek, said: “This certification reflects Sofitel Downtown Dubai’s enduring commitment to responsible hospitality. It recognises the hotel’s progress in embedding sustainability across every aspect of its operations while continuing to deliver exceptional guest experiences.”
The hotel continues to pursue ambitious environmental objectives, including reducing food waste, energy and water consumption by 5% this year, alongside a 2% reduction in carbon emissions per occupied room. These initiatives are complemented by responsible sourcing practices and continued investment in community engagement.
Throughout the certification process, the hotel demonstrated measurable progress across key sustainable pillars. Energy efficiency initiatives include LED lighting, advanced HVAC technologies, low-consumption equipment and ongoing performance monitoring supported by regular team training. Water conservation efforts focus on intelligent filtration systems, towel and linen reuse programmes, leak detection and water-efficient housekeeping and landscaping practices.
Waste reduction remains another priority through comprehensive recycling programmes covering plastics, glass, paper, cardboard, food waste and hazardous materials, while reducing single-use items such across operations. Procurement strategies further reinforce the hotel’s commitment by prioritising environmentally and socially responsible suppliers, eco-certified local products and hydroponic farming partners whenever possible.
Mohamed Hawwam, General Manager of Sofitel Dubai Downtown, said: "At Sofitel Dubai Downtown, luxury is measured not only by the experiences we create, but by the responsibility with which we create them. Green Globe Certification marks an important milestone in our journey toward more responsible hospitality and reflects our commitment to creating experiences that are both meaningful and mindful.
“Every day, our ‘Heartists’ bring this vision to life through thoughtful gestures, conscious choices and genuine care. Together, we are shaping a future where committed luxury and heartfelt hospitality go hand in hand, creating lasting value for our guests, our community and the destination we proudly call home."
