Dubai, UAE, 21 May 2025:
As part of its ongoing commitment to promote education and social well-being, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library organised an insightful session titled 'The Role of Community Work in Improving Mental Health'. The session was organised in collaboration with Al Jalila Children's Hospital and presented by Dr. Azhar Abu Ali, a renowned expert in pediatric and community mental health.
The lecture offered a compelling exploration of the connection between community involvement and mental health, emphasising how acts of kindness, altruism, and volunteering can profoundly enhance well-being across all age groups. Dr. Azhar highlighted that giving without expectation of reward is not only deeply human but also incredibly beneficial for mental and physical health. From babies who demonstrate kindness without being taught, to adults who find joy and purpose in helping others, the act of giving transcends age and background. Dr. Azhar explained that engaging in altruistic behaviour can significantly reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, foster a greater sense of purpose and fulfillment, and even produce positive physiological changes such as lower stress levels, better immune function, and improved longevity.
Throughout the session, Dr. Azhar urged attendees to acknowledge the value of the simplest acts of kindness, noting that meaningful community work does not have to be grand or time-consuming. Whether through volunteering, advocacy, raising awareness, or simply sharing knowledge and support, each person has the potential to make a difference. She encouraged participants to identify causes they feel passionate about, and explore ways to contribute, reminding them that the path to improved mental health often begins with action.
The session ended with an engaging discussion that allowed attendees to reflect on their own experiences with community service, and consider new ways to incorporate altruism into their lives. The event served as a powerful reminder of the essential role community plays in nurturing mental and emotional resilience, and strengthening social bonds.
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Library remains a cornerstone of cultural enrichment and social dialogue in the UAE, providing a platform for learning, collaboration, and initiatives that inspire individual and collective growth.
