Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower), the world’s largest district cooling services provider, will highlight Dubai’s leading experience as a global city in leading the adoption of district cooling systems (DCS) in a presentation which will be led by its CEO Ahmad Bin Shafar during a series of high level meetings with senior officials of the Ministry of Energy in India from November 1 to 3, 2017 in New Delhi and Thane cities. The participation to the meetings and events is part of Empower’s ongoing partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on ‘District Energy in Cities’ initiative.
As the Special Advisor to UNEP on District Cooling, Bin Shafar will highlight the milestones of the growth of the district cooling sector in Dubai, which is among the world’s most effective in reducing electricity and water consumption by about 50 per cent as part of the emirate’s commitment to energy efficiency. The reduction in energy and water consumption is in line with the vision of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Dubai bids to become a global hub for green economy, with the least carbon footprint in the world by 2050.
In line with the UAE’s national commitment to support the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Bin Shafar will participate in Global
Environment Facility (GEF)-6’s media launch themed ‘Creating & Sustaining Markets for Energy Efficiency’, part of the global ‘District Energy in Cities’ initiative. He will also join a series of panel discussion and workshops in New Delhi and Thane cities.
Bin Shafar has been appointed as UNEP Special Advisor last year, through an agreement signed by Empower regarding the role of district cooling in scaling energy efficiency worldwide.
Bin Shafar will join international experts in a panel discussion on the role of innovative technologies in energy efficiency, and will be part of the technical session on ‘District Energy in Cities’ workshop and other brainstorming activities and panels to share with the audience in-depth about the role of district cooling systems in enhancing competitiveness and economic sustainability and discuss the success and best practices of DCS in Dubai.
The world’s leading district cooling services provider plays an active role in raising awareness to scale up district cooling worldwide as an effective air-conditioning technology, leading to increase in energy efficiency, reduction of carbon emissions, and contribute to local and regional economies, while creating positive impact to local communities and the environment.
Among the topics Bin Shafar will highlight during the meetings include the Demand Side Management (DSM) strategy through the district cooling program, tri-generation and smart meters, which contribute to efficient energy consumption..
Dubai is among the world’s most active in reducing electricity and water consumption by about 30 per cent as part of the emirate’s commitment to energy efficiency, in line with the vision of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
