Focus on developing global postal strategy for 2017-2020

Dubai, UAE, October 5, 2016:  Emirates Post Group is participating in the UPU's 26th Universal Postal Congress being held in Istanbul from September 19 to October 7, through a high-level delegation headed by Acting Chief Executive Officer Mr. Abdullah Mohammed Al Ashram. The delegation attended the opening ceremony on September 20, which was presided over by Prime Minister of Turkey, H. E. Binali Yildirim.

The Congress has brought together nearly 2500 representatives from 192 UPU member countries, to lay a roadmap for the UPU's 2017-2020 work cycle, based on the draft Istanbul World Postal Strategy, taking into consideration the common needs of member countries. 

During the opening session of the General Assembly, Mr. Abdulla Al Ashram presented highlights of the development of postal services in Emirates Post Group, especially in the field of Express Mail Service (EMS), and its role as a member of International Bureau of the UPU.

The Universal Postal Congress sets the rules for exchange of international mail and attempts to find solutions for challenges facing the postal sector, with the aim of assisting economic growth and accelerate development, in addition to supporting technological inputs in postal operations. During the Congress, the commissioners from member countries set a roadmap for the global postal sector.

The Congress is attended by representatives of governments and postal sector leaders from UPU member countries and United Nations organizations. Held once in four years, the conference will chalk out strategies and plans for each work cycle, in addition to laying down standards and regulations for international exchange of mail and parcels, help thrash out issues of security, and introduction of financial services and e-commerce at reasonable prices.
