Donation to Help Release Debtors from Prison, Support Repentant Addicts to Travel for Hajj

Dubai, UAE, July 26, 2016:  As part of its sustained drive to improve social security and enhance the role of endowments or waqf in sustainable development, Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation (AMAF) handed over a cheque for AED400,000 to Dubai Police.

The humanitarian initiative has earmarked a dedicated sum of AED300,000 to help release inmates convicted in financial cases as well as those obligated to pay blood money (diyya) from Dubai's punitive and correctional institutions. The remaining AED100,000 will enable repentant drug addicts to go on Hajj.

Omar Juma Kalandar, Deputy Director of Endowment development Department and Ahmed Al Yasi, Director of Financial Affairs Department from AMAF presented the cheque for the amount to Lt. Colonel Dr. Juma Sultan Alshamsi Head of Awareness & Precaution Department, General Department of Anti-Narcotics at Dubai Police during a meeting at Awqaf and Minors affairs foundation headquarters.

Commenting on the occasion, Omar Juma Kalandar said: “We have always sought to boost the spirit of solidarity in our society. With our donation, we aim to encourage convicts to start a new life and make a positive contribution to the progress of their community and nation as a whole.”

For his part, Lt. Colonel Dr. Juma Al Shamsi from Dubai Police, added: “For the fifth consecutive year, AMAF has generously supported our humanitarian initiatives that help rehabilitate convicted debtors and addicts, and make it possible for them to become productive members of society again.”

The cheque presentation for the rehabilitation of the convicts and addicts was organized to fulfil the wishes of waqf donors, who contribute to the Foundation to endorse charity projects on behalf of various social segments, and often choose to support specific causes that are close to their hearts.
